College Entrance Tests

As you prepare for college one of the most important things you will do is take an entrance exam.  Colleges look at these scores when making decisions about admitting you and granting you scholarship money. Investing time into preparing for these exams is well worth your time and effort.  Check with the school you want to attend to find out which entrance exam they prefer. Test prep expense can vary widely, from free to hundreds of dollars. Check out online sources, books you can purchase, and online tutoring.

The ACT is a standardized test used for college admissions in the United States. SUCCESS Academy offers ACT prep during the junior college prep class on Fridays. Specific subjects are prepped by teachers in English/Reading, Math, and Science. A practice test will be given by counselors. Additional test prep is available in your UtahFutures account.

The SAT is an entrance exam used by most colleges and universities to make admissions decisions. It is a multiple-choice, pencil-and-paper test administered by the College Board.

Info

The Preliminary SAT, also known as the PSAT/NMSQT® (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test), is a practice version of the SAT exam. You can only take the PSAT once per year, and many students take the test in both 10th and 11th grade. If you earn a high score on the PSAT your junior year, you could qualify to receive a National Merit Scholarship—$180 million dollars in merit scholarships are awarded to students each year. The PSAT is 2 hours and 45 minutes long and tests your skills in reading, writing, and math. Unlike the SAT, the highest score possible on the PSAT is 1520.
